In this edition of FSI Talks, Alberto Fílter, FSI Lab Coordinator and podcast host, sits down with Jesús Olivares and Pablo Trueba.
Jesús currently serves as the Head of Performance at Estoril Praia SAD.
Pablo, on the other hand, is the Fitness Coach for Real Betis C.
Not only do they share the experience of working in elite football, but they were also standout students in the FSI Master’s in Physical Preparation. Through hard work and dedication, they secured positions at their respective clubs after completing their internships.
Additionally, they discuss the differences between amateur and professional football, how to manage microcycles in high-performance clubs, and the importance of specialized football education to succeed in this competitive industry.
The Impact of FSI Internships on Professional Development
FSI internships play a key role in shaping students’ careers, and Jesús and Pablo are clear examples of their value. These internships, available to all students who complete an FSI master’s program, provide opportunities to apply for positions at one of FSI’s 40 elite football partner clubs.
Jesús Olivares highlights how his internship at Estoril Praia allowed him to gain autonomy and confidence under the supervision of experienced professionals.
“The first week was an adaptation process—observing methodologies and learning. Little by little, they gave me more responsibility, and that was key to securing my place at the club.”
On the other hand, Pablo Trueba emphasizes the importance of the resources available at professional clubs.
“The number of tools, technology, and staff in an elite club allows you to prioritize what truly matters and work with a more structured approach.”
Key Differences Between Amateur and Professional Football
One of the central discussions in this episode is how the professional football environment differs from the amateur level. In a professional club, responsibilities are much more defined—each team member has a clear role, allowing for greater efficiency. Professional clubs not only have more resources but also a structured system that promotes specialization and continuous development.
The episode also highlights how the demands of professional football require a deep understanding of the sport. It’s essential to grasp the tactical and contextual aspects of football to optimize performance.
Both guests agree that specialized football education, such as the programs offered by FSI, makes a real difference when stepping into the professional world.
Innovation in Methodologies and Microcycle Management
Another fascinating part of the episode is the discussion on managing microcycles in elite football clubs. Jesús explains how each day of the week is carefully planned to maximize performance and recovery.
“On Mondays, we usually focus on regeneration, while towards the end of the week, sessions become more specific, balancing physical and tactical load.”
Pablo highlights the crucial role of technology and data in this process.
“We use advanced platforms that allow us to analyze workload and adjust sessions according to each player’s individual needs.”
A Final Reflection: The Evolution of Knowledge in Football
The podcast concludes with a reflection on how football knowledge is rapidly evolving, driven by research and technological advancements.
Science is transforming the way we understand and train football. More than ever, clubs are seeking professionals who combine a deep understanding of the sport with technological skills.
Jesús and Pablo emphasize the importance of continuous learning and real-world experience for those looking to succeed in the field.
“It’s not just about studying—it’s about applying what you’ve learned and adapting to the demands of the professional environment.”
