In this edition of FSI Talks, we have the participation of three renowned experts in sports science and physical performance.

Luis Suárez, Head of Performance at FC Lugano and professor at Pablo de Olavide University.

Nacho Torreño, Performance Director at Chicago Fire FC.

Javi Núñez, professor at the Faculty of Sports Science at Pablo de Olavide University.

The three specialists meet to discuss key strategies in hamstring injury prevention in elite football. During the podcast, the speakers explore multifactorial approaches to address these injuries, the importance of personalization in training, and the impact of physical and emotional well-being on players’ performance.

The multifactorial approach to injury prevention.

The panel agreed that effective hamstring injury prevention requires a multifactorial approach. This involves integrating physical, emotional, and technical aspects. According to Javi Núñez:

“We cannot approach a muscle injury as if it were only a matter of the muscle; we must consider the entire system, including the fascia and the tendon.”

The importance of personalizing training programs according to each player’s individual needs was emphasized, from mobility and strength exercises to recovery protocols. Luis Suárez stressed that while standardized protocols can be useful, personalization allows for addressing specific intrinsic and extrinsic factors.

Emotional factors and their impact on injuries.

Nacho Torreño shared an example of how a personal incident can directly influence performance and susceptibility to injuries:

“During a perfect preseason in physical terms, a player suffered an injury right after a traumatic personal event. This shows that we cannot always control all the factors, but we must be aware of their impact.”

Emotional factors, such as stress or lack of rest, can impair recovery ability and increase the risk of injuries. This reinforces the need for a holistic approach, where emotional and physical well-being are treated as a unit.

Interdisciplinary collaboration and continuous adaptation.

One of the key points discussed was the importance of collaboration between medical teams, fitness coaches, and trainers.

According to Luis Suárez:

“Success lies in communication and trust within the multidisciplinary team, where each member brings a unique perspective.”

This synergy allows for a comprehensive evaluation of players and the implementation of adaptive plans based on individual history and demands.

In addition, the role of variability in training was discussed to better prepare players for the dynamic demands of elite football. The inclusion of vibratory and high-intensity exercises at strategic moments was mentioned as an effective tool to optimize muscle preparation.

Injury prevention doesn't have simple solutions.

Instead, it requires an approach that combines science, practical experience, and a deep understanding of the player as an individual. From managing fatigue to interdisciplinary work, these experts offered valuable insights that can transform the approach to injury prevention in high-performance sports.
