Graeme Close is a Professor of Human Physiology at Liverpool John Moores University. He combines his academic research with consulting in nutrition and physiology for elite sports organizations, including England Rugby, DP World Tour Golf, and Premier League teams. He is the Deputy Chair of the Sport and Exercise Nutrition Register (SENr) and a fellow of the European College of Sport Science and BASES.

Professional Career

Graeme has published over 240 scientific articles and reviews, with a prominent research focus on vitamin D, muscle damage, aging, and cannabidiol (CBD) applied to skeletal muscle. He regularly participates as a keynote speaker at international conferences and contributes to television and radio programs such as BBC Trust Me I’m a Doctor and ITV Truth About Food. Academically, he earned his PhD in 2003 from Liverpool John Moores University, where he has been a professor since 2009. Before that, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Liverpool, focusing on translational medicine.
He also holds accreditations in sports nutrition (SENr), strength coaching (UKSCA), and applied physiology (BASES). From an applied perspective, Graeme works with elite athletes in rugby, golf, and football, optimizing their nutrition and physical performance. He is widely recognized for his evidence-based approach, promoting practical applications of his research findings.
