Mark Russell is a professor at Leeds Trinity University, specializing in performance nutrition and exercise physiology applied to team sport athletes. An active researcher, he has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, presented at international conferences, and led numerous industry-funded research projects. Currently, he leads the "Enhancing Human Performance" research theme at the university, with a particular interest in strategies to improve performance in team sports.

Professional Career

Mark supervises several doctoral candidates at Leeds Trinity University. Their projects focus on profiling the performance and physiological responses of football goalkeepers and substitutes in team sports. He also researches strategies to enhance in-game performance, optimize halftime strategies, and facilitate recovery in Rugby League players. He has worked with various professional rugby and football teams and has advised English Premier League clubs and national and international rugby teams.
From 2010 to 2017, Mark served as the National Lead for Applied Exercise Physiology with UK Deaf Sport, coordinating sports science support services for DeaflympicsGB at the 2013 Summer Deaflympics in Sofia, Bulgaria. He also served as Interim Co-Lead for Research and Knowledge Exchange at the university, overseeing submissions for the Knowledge Exchange Framework (KEF) and the Research Excellence Framework (REF). Currently, he leads the Assessment Unit for the institution's submissions to REF2021 and REF2029. Additionally, Mark chaired the University's Research Ethics and Integrity Subcommittee from June 2020 to September 2023 and remains an active member of several strategic committees focused on research governance and integrity.
