Currently
Matt Buckthorpe has been a Senior Lecturer in Strength and Conditioning Science and Physiology at St Mary’s University since January 2022. He has also been a Professor at the Football Science Institute since July 2019 and a Consultant in Education, Research, and Development at the Isokinetic Medical Group (FIFA Medical Centre of Excellence) since 2017, focusing on functional recovery programs, particularly for managing patients with knee injuries.
Professional Career
Matt began his career at Fulham FC as a Sports Scientist in Research and Development (2011–2012) and later served as a Performance Science Consultant for Southampton FC (2016–2019). At the Isokinetic Medical Group, he led sports rehabilitation services, working with elite athletes across various disciplines.
Skills and Expertise
Matt holds a PhD in Sports Science from Loughborough University (2009–2013), where his research focused on neuromuscular performance and injury prevention. He also earned an MSc in Sports Science with distinction from Loughborough University (2009) and a BSc in Sports Science with honors from the University of Leeds (2008). Additionally, he holds an FA Level 2 Coaching Football certification.
