Ketone Ester Supplementation Improves Some Aspects of Cognitive Function during a Simulated Soccer Match after Induced Mental Fatigue.
Quinones MD(1), Lemon PWR(1).
Nutrients. 2022 Oct 19;14(20):4376. doi: 10.3390/nu14204376.
In this study 9 recreationally active men performed a 40-min mental fatiguing task and then completed a 45-min simulated soccer half game consuming either ketone monoester supplement KME (25 g) or a non-caloric placebo. KME reduced concentrations of both blood glucose and blood lactate, perhaps indicating a CHO sparing effect, and reduced the cognitive performance decrement measured by a Choice Reaction Task during the game.
A Systematic Review of the Relationship between Workload and Injury Risk of Professional Male Soccer Players.
Jiang Z(1), Hao Y(2), Jin N(1), Li Y(3).
Int J Environ Res Public Health. 2022 Oct 14;19(20):13237. doi: 10.3390/ijerph192013237.
The systematic review of the literature concluded that: (1) It appears that short-term, but not long-term fixture congestion may increase the match injury incidence (2) It is impossible to determine conclusively whether any global positioning system (GPS)-derived metrics are associated with an increased risk of injury. (3) The acute:chronic workload ratio (ACWR) of the session rating of perceived exertion (s-RPE) may be significantly associated with the risk of non-contact injuries, but an ACWR threshold with a minimum risk of injury could not be obtained. (4) Based on the workload and fatigue recovery factors, artificial intelligence technology may possess good predictive power regarding injury risk.

The Perception of Grassroots Coaches of Spanish Professional Clubs on the Process of Training Young Players.
Martín Barrero A(1), Giménez Fuentes-Guerra FJ(2), Abad Robles MT(2).
Sports (Basel). 2022 Oct 18;10(10):158. doi: 10.3390/sports10100158.
This study using a questionnaire of 57 questions answered by 153 coaches from top-level Spanish professional clubs found that regarding talent identification and development, coaches considered that genetic inheritance is more important than contextual variables, and they did not show a clear consensus on whether players who perform better in the initiation stage have a greater chance of reaching the elite. In addition, they valued decision-making and technical qualities rather than physical condition.
Lumbar spine MRI findings in asymptomatic elite male academy footballers: a case series.
Carmody S(1)(2), Rajeswaran G(3), Mitchell A(3), Kryger KO(4), Ahmad I(5), Gill M(6), Rushton A(7)(8).
BMC Sports Sci Med Rehabil. 2022 Oct 24;14(1):184. doi: 10.1186/s13102-022-00576-1.
In this study, an MRI was performed in 18 asymptomatic male elite adolescent footballers recruited from a professional academy in England, finding that 83% showed ≥1 abnormalities, included facet degeneration, synovial cysts, disc degeneration, disc herniation, and pars injury. 22% presented pars injuries, 38% disc degeneration at one or more levels, and 27% disc herniation.
