Adam Owen is a member of the Football Science Institute faculty, bringing a high-performance perspective that integrates professional club experience, technical leadership and a strong scientific foundation.

Currently

He is currently a coach at Blackburn Rovers, a club competing in the EFL Championship. He is also a recognised author in football performance, having published the book Football Conditioning: A Modern Scientific Approach, a key reference in modern football conditioning and physical preparation.

He holds a PhD in Sport and Exercise Science from the Université de Lyon (France), a background that supports his scientific approach to performance planning and load management.

Professional background

Adam Owen began his career as a professional footballer with Wrexham AFC, before playing for clubs such as Connah's Quay, Cefn Druids and East Stirlingshire. He represented Wales at the British Universities Games, competing against national teams from England and Scotland.

During his transition into coaching, he worked with top-level clubs such as Rangers FC, where he contributed to multiple league and cup successes, including the UEFA Cup final in 2008. He later held technical roles at Celtic FC, Sheffield Wednesday, Sheffield United and Servette FC, and served as head coach at Lechia Gdańsk.

His international experience includes working as assistant coach to Chris Coleman at Hebei China Fortune FC, where he worked with elite players such as Javier Mascherano and Ezequiel Lavezzi.

In the United States, he held technical and high-performance roles with Seattle Sounders FC, leading the team to MLS finals and competing in the CONCACAF Champions League. He later worked as a technical advisor at Lech Poznań, contributing to the club’s Ekstraklasa title in the 2021–22 season.

He was also part of the coaching staff of the Wales national team, playing a key role during UEFA Euro 2016, where the team reached the semi-finals.

His career stands out for combining experience across clubs in Europe, Asia and the Americas with a meaningful academic contribution to professional football through books and applied scientific publications.
