Matthew Buckthorpe is part of the FSI Training faculty, contributing a strong scientific and applied background in functional reconditioning, neuromuscular performance, and injury prevention in football.

He is a Senior Lecturer in Strength and Conditioning Science and Physiology at St Mary’s University, combining university teaching with applied research in performance and rehabilitation.

In parallel, he works as an Education, Research and Development consultant at the Isokinetic Medical Group, a FIFA Medical Centre of Excellence, with a particular focus on knee injury management.

Professional background

He has developed a solid career across academia and clinical practice, working in elite environments such as Fulham FC and Southampton FC, and leading sports rehabilitation services at Isokinetic.

Holding a PhD in sport sciences, his research output focuses on neuromuscular performance, anterior cruciate ligament rehabilitation, and muscle injury prevention, integrating scientific evidence with applied practice in professional football.
