The partnership will focus on three key areas: professional development, applied research and knowledge exchange, with the shared goal of contributing to the ongoing development of elite football.

Supporting continuous professional development

As part of the agreement, SL Benfica’s technical and performance staff will have access to FSI’s specialised master’s programmes and professional certifications. Benfica staff will also have institutional access to the FSI Internationals Conferences, providing an opportunity to connect with the latest research, ideas and practical approaches in football science.

For both organisations, continued professional development is an important part of working in an increasingly demanding and constantly evolving high-performance environment.

Applied research through FSI Lab

SL Benfica will also join FSI Lab as a collaborating institution, contributing to applied research projects in areas including performance optimisation, injury prevention and data-informed decision-making.

Throughout 2026, FSI and Benfica will explore research initiatives involving FSI faculty, Benfica professionals and academic talent. The aim is to develop research with a clear practical focus and generate knowledge that can be transferred directly into elite football environments.

Expanding opportunities for the FSI community

The partnership also adds SL Benfica to FSI Training’s growing international network of clubs and sports organisations, further connecting education, research and professional practice.

For FSI students, this network creates opportunities to gain greater exposure to elite sporting environments and to engage with professionals working at the highest level of the game.

The collaboration with SL Benfica represents another step in FSI Training’s work to bring together academia and professional football, creating stronger links between research, education and day-to-day performance practice.
